Time needed: 5 minutes
Sit is one of the first commands every puppy learns. It is also one of the easiest behaviors to teach so it is a great one to start with. It is important that you start training in a place that is calm and quiet. As your puppy learns you want to increase the distractions until your puppy can perform anywhere!
- Step 1
Sit on the floor with the puppy directly in front of you.
- Step 2
Place a smelly, yummy, tiny treat right in front of your puppy’s nose and get his attention.
- Step 3
As he is licking/nibbling on the treat, raise the treat up slightly and back towards his tail. As the puppy’s head goes up to follow the treat his bottom will naturally come down.
- Step 4
As soon as his bottom hits the floor say the word yes (or click if you are using clicker training) and let him have the treat.
- Step 5
Repeat many, many times! Keep training sessions short (5 minutes or less) but do them frequently throughout the day.
